This certainly applies to the JDM and USDM cars & some yUK models - depends on what system you have fitted.
Basically, this mods the auto light turn off system to enable you to set the tail lights to stay on (parking lights) As standard the cars auto off system kills both the side lights and headlights when the ignition is cut and you open the drivers door. This is anoying if you want to leave your lights on for safety reasons etc, the factory system allows you to reset the system but only by turning the lights off and back on again! This mod allows you to choose to have the tails stay on bit STILL automatically switches off the headlights as normal. At Integration relay 2 - Retract Control (drivers trim below side air vent) Simply insert a diode into the circuit as below, a standard IN4001 is fine. ![]() Probably not something that bugs a lot of people but, it was bugging me

Just revisited this and have managed to the modify the lighting system so that the headlights retract when going back to the tail light position.
What does this mean? Well, because my lights are automated so, the tails come on at one setting then the heads at another I found it irritating when stopping at a garage or shop etc that, if I had selected to have the side lights stay on manually with the factory stalk switch the pop ups would also stay up ruining the lines of the car. So, disabling the auto off system means my tail lights stay on when I want them to instead of going out when the drivers doors opened. Modding the retract control relay with the diode mod above and moving the position of a wire in the light switch stalk gives me control of the pop ups. 20 min mod too ![]() For cleaning the "hold" position still works however, now if the switch is on side light position the pop ups will lower after a few seconds without having to go back to the off position. This also means when the headlights have been triggered by the auto light system they will retract when the ignition is switched off even if the light switch is set to tail position. These small things do bother me........

i liked the auto off
saved me the hassle of remembering to do it manually.. and as you say it can always be overridden. Though it was a great idea... Like most of the stuff in those cars, such as those utterly brilliant front seat belts, and the key surround lighting up when you lift the door handle... or any other fantastic little touches i've forgotten about. Those cars are the nadgers.. (can anyone tell i'm now driving a boring and noisy astra).

Yes, the auto off is a good idea & I keep the function for the headlights just not the sides as it just don't work how I'd like.
With the automatic lighting system I fitted it's kinda redundant anyway The stuff they fitted to the Limiteds is quite impressive and still up to date too, when these things came out they must have seemed like concept cars compared to what was standard at the time, quite the imaginative and innovative team they had working on these it seems. All the electronics is executed superbly unlike this modern sh!te which packs up or requires a new patch almost weekly ..... |
